In the United States, the social security card is a card carrying a nine digit social security number to the U.S. citizens (both permanent residents and temporary or working residents) under the social security act of section 205(c)(2) in the constitution of USA. This number as seen on application-filing-service.com/socialsecuritycard/replacement-social-security-card-child/ is issued to an individual by the department of Social Security Administration which is an independent agency of the United States Government. the prime purpose of this social security card is to track every individual in case of social security purposes. It is also used in the field of taxation and has become an unique identification number for every individual residing in the United States of America.
Now, there are 3 types of social security cards which are issued in the USA. first type contains name of the person and the social security number and this is issued to the US born citizens and permanent residents. The second and third type are two restricted type of social security cards. The second type of card is not valid as a document for employment purposes and the third type is only valid for employment or work purposes with DHS &/or INS authorization but the card must accompany a work authorization card or a document of such type and only then it will be a valid proof for the person as an employee in the US.
The principle question which many people have in mind that how long does it usually take to get a new social security card? well, if you go to the office of Social Security department it generally takes about 5 to 10 minutes for processing your request and the social security card is generally sent to you via mail in about two weeks. There are certain cases where you can get your social security card in 2 to 3 days after applying for it but if it takes more than 14 to 15 days then they are still might be verifying your documents and the details which you provided to them. This timing of the Social Security Card for reaching to you takes almost the same time for a baby as well.
If it has been quite a long time i.e. more than 20 days it would be better that you go to the office and confirm about the status of your application and ask if the details that you provided were proper or not.If you are not born in US and went there for work purposes then you might have to show suitable documents showing your permanent residency details, your proof of citizenship of your country along with the document(s) which clearly states that you are permitted to work in USA and your employment documentation.
But there are other cases as well where detailed documentation is not necessary and this comes into play in case of students who went to US. the international students are given a social security number but they need to show a certificate of eligibility for the Exchange Visitor status. In rare cases, when the social security card has failed to reach the applicant due to certain errors the social security number can be known from the office in the form of a letter stating the person’s social security number but this letter can’t be used as a substitute for the Social security card but the number can be used in different purposes.
